GREETINGS FROM THE DISABLED GARDEN

Three and a half years ago, I was in a near fatal car accident. I am a C-3 tetraplegic, unable to use my arms or legs, as a result of the crash. I spent one month in Vancouver General Hospital and two months in a hospital in my home state of California.

After begging, pleading, and demanding that I be allowed to return home, the doctors consented. My husband, daughter, and I continue to adjust to our new circumstances.

Now, with my daughter safely off to college, I have allowed myself to refocus. Over the last three and a half years - the garden too has been disabled. Gone was my front garden border of Black-eyed Susan's and purple cone flowers. My creeping charlie was over-run with weeds, as was my ground-covering strawberry vines. The garden is now in all too clear a focus.

Previously, my husband and I always shared the yard work. He handled the heavy trimming and grass cutting. I managed weeding, trimming, and planting. Since the accident, he has maintained the entire household.

Now I need his help once more. I want my cone flowers back.
