Laura Wells, Class of 2004, was a quietly determined, but gentle person, with a passion for life. Her cheerfulness and enthusiasm for all her projects and hobbies was infectious. A group of us met and formed a friendship while volunteering at Queen Alexandra School Garden in 2007. Together we worked with Elementary School Kids in the large garden, discovering the world of plants & insects; we held plants sales, exploratory walks and even slug races.
When the project took a hiatus, we stayed connected thru various get togethers, though we each moved on to new MG persuits. Laura became involved with native plant restoration in Mahon Park , North Vancouver and shared some of her enthusiam over the project for a year end celebration in 2010. Here are her photos and her inspiring comments on her work at Mahon Park:
Mahon Park Native Garden Experience: " I would like to express my thanks to the Evergreen Foundation and the MGABC Vancouver for teaming up. This allowed me the opportunity to work with a wonderful group of individuals who know the importance of showing the public the benefits of using British Columbia’s Native Plants in their own gardens"
" These benefits are important in water conservation, pest control, and wildlife enhancement. The volunteers are committed to showcasing the amazing variety of these plants. "
" A big emphasis is on removing invasive species such as Blackberry, Holly, English Ivy, and Clematis (Old Man’s Beard) throughout Mahon Park in North Vancouver. We have planted up large areas with such varieties of plants as Polystichum munitum, Vaccinium ovatum, Mahonia nervosa, Aquilegia Formosa, Allium cemuum, and Symphoricarpos albus as well as trees such as Acer circinatum and Thuja plicata. "
" I now know my own garden on Mount Seymour will be taking on a new look in this coming year. I’ve experienced the wonderful colours and berries that are available throughout all the seasons! Thanks again for the opportunity. " 2010 MG Laura W
