“Worm Composting”

Mel-Lynda Andersen - All Things Organic

All Things Organic’s presentation will be all about worm composting. We will discuss how worm composting differs from conventional composting, and how worm castings enable gardeners to improve soil quality and health over the long term. In addition to describing the many benefits of worm composting, we will talk about the differences between worm castings and chemical fertilizers in terms of plant and garden health. We will provide an overview of the organic quality of worm castings, and will provide some neat information about worms. We will also discuss the evolution of worm composting, and how much easier contemporary worm composting systems are compared to the conventional “dump and sort” systems

“Gardening with Wildlife in Mind”

Bardia Khaledi – VanDusen Volunteer Seed Collector

With all the talk about ‘food gardens’ and a resurgence of homesteading, people are starting to pay greater attention to their gardens and what they grow. In this workshop, I will discuss the shortfalls of a purely human-centric garden and will explore the merits of creating a wildlife garden. I will also discuss the myriad of ways one can create habitat and shelter for wildlife and provide food sources for insects and birds.

Bardia holds a M.A. in Anthropology from Simon Fraser University; his thesis explored environmentalism, and conservation practices and accession policies of botanical gardens in BC. He is the Co-chair of the VanDusen Seed Collectors where he promotes seed saving and raises funds for the VanDusen Botanical Garden Association. As an educator and a garden designer at Plant Profusion, he promotes a love for nature and gardening and asks others to create spaces that accommodate native plants and wildlife.

“The Aliens are Coming!”

Tasha Murray, ISCMV

In fact, many are already here and are wreaking havoc on our gardens, natural spaces, and some are even putting infrastructure at risk.  Invasive species such as knotweed, snakehead fish and European fire ant have garnered recent attention and have environmental, economic, and health and safety impacts.  Learn how to recognize our worst local invaders, what is being done in the region to minimize their impacts, and how you can be part of the solution.

Tasha Murray has been involved in environmental education and stewardship in the Pacific Northwest for over thirteen years and has worked extensively to manage invasive plants.  Tasha works for the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver, a non-profit organization that works with individuals, organizations and government to better manage invasive species throughout the region.  She lives in Burnaby with her young family and spends her leisure time gardening and tackling invasive plants!
