Japanese beetle was detected by CFIA in the False Creek area of Vancouver in 2017. It is not known how Japanese beetle arrived in Vancouver. It could have come in on infected nursery stock or soil or adults could have hitched a ride on trains or cars traveling from the east.

If you live in Vancouver, please familiarize yourself with the information below and follow the links for more discussion.

Until further notice, the movement of plant material and soil out of the regulated area is restricted. A revised regulated area came into effect on February 7, 2019.

  • The movement of rooted plants and soil out of the regulated area is restricted all year round.

  • The movement of above-ground plant parts out of the regulated area is restricted between June 15 and October 15, which is the flight period of the adult beetles.

The CFIA is restricting the movement of soil, rooted plants with soil and other plant material that is infested or likely to be infested with Japanese beetle out of the regulated area. These restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of human-assisted spread of the beetle.

Learn more about the CFIA's movement controls before you move plant material or soil out of the regulated area.

Please also share this email with your gardening friends in the city. If infested debris or soil is transported out of False Creek, Japanese beetle could pop up in other neighbourhoods.

It is wise for gardeners elsewhere in the Lower Mainland and BC to be aware of Japanese beetle so please have a look and also forward to your gardening friends and neighbours so you can be on the lookout.

We do not want this pest in BC! On the off chance that you were to ever discover a beetle that looks like Japanese beetle in your garden or in a park, please contact CFIA immediately!

It is also important to understand the difference between European Chafer Grubs and Japanese Chafer Grubs.

Neither of these pests look like our native Garden Beetle or Garden Beetle Larva
