Vancouver Master Gardeners Advanced Training Program: Renewal Days 2019
VanMG Advanced Training Program's new initiative 3 different Renewal Days targeted MGs who had taken the full Advanced Training Program.
Enthusiastic students, a mix of graduates from our classes ranging from 1997 through to 2016, attended. Our Renewal instructors will teach the full Advanced Training Program in September 2019. They made the days exciting and packed with brand newinformation that Master Gardeners should know. The instructors were asked to include, if appropriate, information related to climate change and small gardens. The classes were full.
Day 1 included Botany, Trees for Small Gardens, Taxonomy, IPM.
Botany highlighted many changes and new knowledge in the field. Trees for Small Gardens offered what to look for in choosing trees and provided a list of small trees. Taxonomy labwork with hand lens and specimens focused on Liliaceae, and the many changes in our understanding of what is a HUGE family. IPM discussed current new problems and what to watch out for in the future.
Day 2 was a visit to Petals and Butterflies Nursery where the focus was on a changing garden, plants & their best sites, plants that have survived in stressful circumstances, plus new and old unusual plants. ( photos from Lillian H. of Gwen’s garden )
Day 3 included Soils, Native Plants, Plant Disease Diagnosing, and Shrubs.
Soils dealt with problems and solutions related to climate change and to construction sites, and to many current issues that come up in clinics. Native Plants suggested many BC native plants for small
gardens, stressed the value of native plants to withstand changes and offered suggestions for coping with climate change. Plant Disease Diagnosing featured practise in diagnosing many different problems found on specimens brought by MGs. Shrubs was a walk in VanDusen, with emphasis on shrubs for small gardens, and those which are adaptable for a changing city environment.
